On the afternoon of 23 May 1984, a 24-year-old Ayrton Senna climbed into a Toleman-Hart — a midfield car with no business being anywhere near the front of the Monaco Grand Prix grid — and proceeded to produce what many observers still call the greatest single qualifying lap in the history of motorsport.
The circuit was damp, the conditions treacherous. The established stars of the era — Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg — had set their times and retreated to the warmth of their garages. Senna went out again. And again. On his final flying lap, he found something no one else could find: a line through Casino Square, through Mirabeau, through the Swimming Pool complex that defied what anyone believed was physically possible on four wheels.
When his sector times came through, the timing screens fell quiet. Engineers put down their clipboards. Team principals walked to the pit wall. His lap was 1.1 seconds faster than Prost, the reigning world champion, in a far superior McLaren. On a street circuit that offers no room for error, in a car that was never supposed to challenge for pole position.
"When I am in the car, I am not thinking about the road," Senna said afterwards, characteristically. "I am thinking about the feeling of the car. The car is an extension of myself." That afternoon at Monaco, the extension was seamless — a fusion of man and machine so complete it has never quite been replicated.
The race itself would end in controversy. Running second behind Prost in torrential rain, Senna was catching the Frenchman at a rate of three seconds per lap when Clerk of the Course Jacky Ickx red-flagged the race on lap 31. The result was frozen at lap 30, handing victory to Prost. Senna was devastated, then composed, then quietly certain of what everyone already knew: he was the fastest man alive.
He would go on to win Monaco six times. But this pole, in 1984, in a Toleman, remains the one that defined what he was.
